AI Reads Your Review Text, Not Your Stars: A Contractor’s Guide
Most contractors track their star rating like a performance score. Get to 4.8, protect it, keep asking for reviews. That logic made sense when homeowners clicked a map listing based on the number next to your name. It still matters for traditional search. For AI search, star ratings are a baseline threshold, not a differentiator. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google’s AI Overviews do not rank contractors by stars. They read every word your customers have written and use that text to decide whether your business matches a specific question.
A contractor with 47 reviews averaging 4.9 stars that all say “Great service, highly recommend” is invisible to AI search. A contractor with 90 reviews averaging 4.6 stars where customers describe the specific job, the technician’s behavior, and the outcome gets cited. The difference is not the rating. It is the signal density in the text.
Why AI Models Read Reviews as Content, Not Scores
AI language models answer questions by finding the most relevant, credible text match for a query. When a homeowner asks ChatGPT “Who does same-day AC repair in Phoenix?” the model does not filter businesses by star count. It looks for businesses whose associated content, including reviews, mentions same-day availability and AC repair in Phoenix. A review that says “Called at 2pm on a Saturday, tech was at our house by 5pm and had the AC running before dinner” is a direct text match to that query. A 5-star review that says “Best company ever” is not.
Google’s AI Overviews work the same way. The system ingests your Google Business Profile, reviews, website content, and third-party mentions to build a picture of what your business does, where it operates, and how reliable it is. Reviews carry particular weight because they represent third-party voice. Language models treat third-party text as more credible than self-reported claims on your own website. A customer saying “They replaced our 20-year-old boiler in one day” carries more weight than your service page saying “Fast boiler replacement available.”
What a High-Signal Review Contains
For AI citation purposes, a useful review has four elements:
Service specificity. What was done, not how it felt. “Replaced the hot water heater” beats “Fixed our problem.” “Installed a new 200-amp electrical panel” beats “Did great work.” The more specific the service description, the more keyword surface area the review covers for AI matching.
Geographic signal. Where the work happened. “Serviced our home in Scottsdale” or “We’re in north Phoenix and they were on time” ties your business to a specific service area. AI models use location mentions in reviews to map coverage areas when your service area pages do not list every ZIP code explicitly.
Outcome detail. What resulted from the work. “Our heating bill dropped noticeably the next month” or “The leak is completely gone and there has been no recurrence in three months” gives AI something to cite when a homeowner asks whether a contractor actually solves problems. Generic praise signals nothing about capability.
Behavioral observation. How the interaction went. “The technician explained exactly what was wrong before starting any work” or “They called 30 minutes before arriving and showed up on time” confirms service quality. AI models use behavioral language to evaluate whether a contractor is trustworthy, not just technically capable.
How to Coach Customers Without Scripting the Review
You cannot tell customers exactly what to write. Coached reviews that read identical or formulaic get filtered by Google and treated as low-authenticity signals by AI models. What you can do is give customers a structure that makes leaving a useful review easy.
Send a review request via text within 24 hours of job completion. Response rates drop sharply after 48 hours. The message should be short: “We appreciated the work today. Google Reviews remain the highest-weight signal for Google’s AI products. For ChatGPT and Perplexity, the picture is more distributed: both pull from Yelp, Facebook, Angi, and industry directories alongside Google. A contractor with 150 Google reviews and zero presence elsewhere is less visible in non-Google AI search than one with 100 Google reviews and 30 each on Yelp and Facebook.
