Perplexity Search for Contractors: How to Get Cited Before Your Competitors Figure It Out

·7 min read

Perplexity reached 100 million users in early 2026 and is now processing over 100 million queries per day. When a homeowner types "best plumber in Denver" or "who does AC repair near me tonight," Perplexity synthesizes an answer from multiple sources and names a business. Most contractors are not in that answer. One study from early 2026 found that fewer than 2 percent of local service businesses appear in Perplexity's AI-generated local recommendations, compared to over 35 percent appearing in Google's local 3-pack for the same queries. The window to be one of the early contractors Perplexity trusts is open now, and it closes faster than most businesses realize.

Perplexity is not Google AI Overviews. They read different data sources, synthesize answers differently, and respond to different optimization signals. A contractor who optimizes only for Google AI Overviews and GBP is invisible on Perplexity. The signal that gets you cited on one platform does not automatically transfer to the other. Understanding the difference is the fastest way to get ahead of local competitors who treat all AI search as the same thing.

How Perplexity Selects a Local Contractor to Recommend

Google AI Overviews draws primarily from Google's own index: your website, your GBP, your Google Reviews. Perplexity crawls the open web and reads third-party sources heavily. When someone asks Perplexity who to call for emergency HVAC service in their city, Perplexity reads:

  • Reddit threads where local homeowners discuss contractors by name and describe their experiences. Perplexity treats Reddit as a high-trust source for local service recommendations because the content is peer-generated with no commercial relationship to the businesses mentioned.
  • Yelp and Angi review pages for contractors in the queried city. Perplexity reads review text, not just ratings. A Yelp listing with 18 recent reviews that name your specific services and city outweighs a listing with a 4.9-star average and no review text.
  • Nextdoor recommendations and contractor discussions, which Perplexity now indexes partially as of early 2026.
  • Local news mentions and blog references that name your business in the context of a service or project.
  • Your website content, specifically pages that directly answer the question a homeowner is asking in the first 100 to 150 words.

The pattern Perplexity looks for is multi-source consensus. A contractor whose name appears on Reddit, in their own website content, on Yelp, and on a local directory in consistent, specific language is a strong candidate for citation. A contractor who exists only on their own website and GBP is not, regardless of how good the website content is. Google AI Overviews can cite a business with a strong GBP and no off-site presence. Perplexity cannot construct a confident recommendation without corroborating sources from independent platforms.

The Content Format Perplexity Cites

Perplexity quotes pages where the answer to the homeowner's question appears in the first 100 to 150 words of the relevant page section. A service page that leads with a company history paragraph, a generic value statement, or a call-to-action before explaining what the service includes is a page Perplexity skips. The structure that earns a citation is the same structure that earns PAA placements in Google: question in the heading, direct answer in the first paragraph, specific details before any qualifications.

An HVAC contractor's emergency service page that opens with "We provide same-day AC repair and furnace service in the Phoenix metro, 7 days a week including holidays. Most emergency calls are dispatched within 90 minutes. Diagnostic fees start at $89 and are waived if we perform the repair" gives Perplexity three citation-ready facts it can quote in a synthesized answer. A page that opens with "We are a family-owned company dedicated to your comfort since 2001" provides nothing Perplexity can use in response to an emergency service query. Rewrite your service page intros to lead with the specific information first.

Reddit as a Citation Signal

Reddit is the most underused citation channel for home service contractors. Perplexity weights Reddit results heavily because the content is peer-generated and has no advertising relationship to the businesses being mentioned. A thread on r/Phoenix where five homeowners recommend the same plumber by name and describe specific details of the experience is exactly the kind of third-party consensus Perplexity looks for before naming a business in a local query response.

You cannot manufacture Reddit recommendations, but you can be present in the communities where they happen. This means monitoring subreddits for your service area (r/[city], r/HomeImprovement, r/[city]DIY), answering homeowner questions about symptoms and costs without self-promotion, and providing genuinely useful responses that establish your expertise. When a homeowner posts "why is my AC freezing over" and you answer the question clearly and accurately with your real name (not your business name), your presence becomes associated with HVAC expertise in that community over time. When satisfied customers post organically about their experience with your company, Perplexity reads and cites those posts. The direct self-promotional approach gets downvoted into invisibility and produces the opposite of the result you want.

Review Platform Diversity Over Review Volume

For Google AI Overviews, Google Reviews is the dominant signal. For Perplexity, review platform diversity matters more than volume on any single platform. A contractor with 45 Google Reviews and nothing else is less citation-eligible on Perplexity than a contractor with 20 Google Reviews, 12 Yelp Reviews, 8 Angi ratings, and a 4.7-star Facebook page. Perplexity reads the distribution of mentions across independent platforms as a signal of how widely trusted the business is, not just how popular it is on one source.

PlatformPerplexity weightMinimum useful threshold
YelpHigh (direct indexing)10 reviews with text, updated in past 6 months
Google ReviewsHigh (indexed via web crawl)20 reviews with text, 4.3 stars or above
Angi / HomeAdvisorMedium8 reviews with project descriptions
Facebook ReviewsMedium12 reviews with specific service mentions
HouzzMedium for remodeling and specialty trades6 project photos with reviews
Reddit mentionsHigh (organic only)3 or more unprompted positive threads

You do not need 100 reviews on each platform. You need recent reviews with text content on at least four platforms. One new review per platform per month, consistently maintained, builds the multi-source consensus Perplexity requires within 90 to 120 days of starting the effort.

Three Actions for This Week

  1. Search your trade and city on Perplexity right now and read the full answer it generates. Open perplexity.ai and type "best [plumber/HVAC contractor/electrician] in [your city]." If your business does not appear, look at who does appear and where Perplexity sources the citation: a Yelp link, a Reddit thread, a local directory, a competitor's website. That source list tells you exactly which platforms Perplexity trusts for your market and which ones you need a presence on. If a competitor appears and you do not, click through to their Yelp profile and compare review count, recency, and the specificity of review text to yours. The gap between your Yelp profile and theirs is the first thing to close. Most contractors complete this exercise in 15 minutes and leave with a clear list of three platforms to build out over the next 90 days.
  2. Find the subreddit for your service area and spend 20 minutes reading recent posts about home repair. Search Reddit for r/[yourcity] and look for questions homeowners are asking that match the services you provide. Create an account with your real name, not your business name, and answer two questions this week with specific, useful information and no self-promotion. The goal in week one is not visibility. It is establishing presence in the community where Perplexity is actively sourcing local contractor recommendations. A single genuine, helpful answer about diagnosing a furnace issue builds more Perplexity citation potential over 90 days than a dozen keyword-stuffed blog posts on your own website, because Perplexity trusts the Reddit source and treats it as independent peer validation rather than self-reported marketing content.
  3. Ask your next three customers to leave a Yelp review specifically, not Google. Most contractors with a strong Google Reviews presence have a nearly empty Yelp profile. Perplexity weights Yelp heavily for local service queries, and a Yelp listing with three reviews from 2022 is not citation-eligible regardless of your Google review count. The review request is straightforward: "We would really appreciate a review on Yelp. It helps other homeowners find us when they search for [your service] online. Just search our business name on Yelp and click Write a Review." For customers who say they do not use Yelp, redirect them to Angi or Facebook instead. Review platform diversity compounds over time. Running this script consistently for 90 days builds citation eligibility across four platforms simultaneously, which is exactly the multi-source footprint Perplexity requires before naming a business in a local recommendation.

Perplexity will not replace Google for local contractor searches this year. It will account for a growing share of the research phase that happens before the homeowner calls anyone. A contractor cited in a Perplexity answer when a homeowner asks "who does roof replacement in [city]" is in the conversation before their competitor who only appears in Google results ever gets a chance. The work is different from traditional SEO, takes 60 to 90 days to produce visible results, and is currently being done by fewer than one in fifty contractors in any given market. That gap is the opportunity.
