Google Ads Assets: The Free CTR Boost Contractors Ignore
Every Google ad you run has a floor and a ceiling. The floor is the headline and description you write. The ceiling is how much space Google will give your ad on the page, which depends heavily on the assets you attach. Assets (Google renamed them from “extensions” in 2022, though many contractors still call them extensions) add sitelinks, call buttons, callout text, structured service lists, and job photos to your ads without increasing your cost per click. They make your ad larger, more informative, and more likely to get clicked over a competitor running a bare three-line ad.
The math is straightforward: a higher click-through rate lowers your cost per click under Quality Score mechanics, and a larger ad format occupies more screen real estate, pushing competitors further down the page. Both outcomes reduce what you pay per lead. Most contractors have never touched the Assets tab in Google Ads. The ones who have set it up correctly are paying 15 to 25 percent less per click on the same keywords while getting more calls.
Sitelink Assets
Sitelinks appear below your main ad as a row of blue links, each pointing to a specific page on your site. Google shows two to six sitelinks depending on the device and the ad’s position on the page. A contractor running sitelinks can occupy nearly twice the vertical space of a competitor with no sitelinks, which matters on mobile where the visible screen is short.
Set up four to six sitelinks minimum. For a plumbing company, that looks like:
- Emergency Plumbing: links to your 24-hour emergency page with a headline like “24/7 Emergency Service” and a two-line description covering your response time and service area
- Water Heater Repair: links to your water heater service page
- Drain Cleaning: links to your drain service page
- Free Estimate: links to your contact or estimate request page
- Financing Available: links to your financing page, if you have one
Each sitelink requires a headline (25 characters max), two description lines (35 characters each), and a URL. The descriptions are worth filling in carefully: they appear below the sitelink text when your ad shows in the top position and give you four additional lines of persuasive copy at no extra cost. Use them to state a specific outcome, a guarantee, or a credential rather than a generic description of the page.
Call Assets
A call asset adds your phone number directly to the ad, creating a tap-to-call button on mobile. On desktop, it shows your number alongside the ad. For contractors, this is the highest-ROI asset to configure: a homeowner with a burst pipe or a failing AC does not want to click through to your site and find your number. They want to tap and call. Call assets remove one step between the search and the call.
Set your call asset to show only during business hours unless you answer 24 hours a day. Showing a call button at 2am when no one answers trains Google’s algorithm that your calls do not convert, which degrades your Quality Score over time. Use ad scheduling within the call asset settings to restrict it to the hours you actually pick up.
Enable call reporting in your Google Ads account settings. This lets Google track calls generated by the call asset as conversions, giving the algorithm data to optimize toward calls rather than just clicks. Without this data, smart bidding strategies cannot distinguish between a click that led to a call and one that bounced after three seconds.
Callout Assets
Callouts are short phrases, 25 characters each, that appear below your ad in a horizontal row. They are not clickable: they exist purely to state facts about your business that do not fit in your headlines or descriptions. Google shows two to six callouts at a time, selecting from your full list based on relevance and character count.
Write eight to ten callouts and let Google rotate the best-performing ones. Strong callout content for contractors includes:
- Licensed and Insured
- Same-Day Service
- No Trip Charge
- BBB Accredited
- Upfront Pricing
- Family Owned Since 1998
- Free Second Opinion
- 100% Satisfaction Guarantee
Each callout is a trust signal. A homeowner scanning results sees your main headline and then a row of short, factual claims below it. The more relevant those claims are to their concern (cost, reliability, speed, credentials), the more likely they click your ad over a competitor with a bare three-line listing.
Structured Snippet Assets
Structured snippets let you list your services under a header like “Services” or “Types.” They appear below the ad description in a formatted list. For a contractor, this is where you explicitly state every service category you offer: Furnace Repair, AC Installation, Duct Cleaning, Thermostat Replacement, Heat Pump Service. A homeowner searching for AC installation who sees your ad with a structured snippet listing AC Installation alongside four other HVAC services is more confident they have found the right business than if the ad mentions only general HVAC service.
Structured snippets require a minimum of three values per header and accept up to ten. Add your full service list and Google will display as many as space allows. Use the “Services” header for your trade categories and a second “Types” header if you want to break out subcategories or equipment brands you service.
Image Assets
Image assets add a job photo to your ad when it displays in top positions on mobile and desktop. Google selects from the images you upload and shows one alongside your headline and description. A before-and-after water heater replacement photo or a completed HVAC installation photo gives your ad a visual dimension that a plain text ad lacks.
Upload a minimum of three images in landscape format (1.91:1 ratio, minimum 600x314 pixels). Use real job photos, not stock images. Google’s image quality guidelines flag overly promotional images or stock photos with text overlays. A genuine job photo taken with a phone performs better than a designed graphic. Avoid images with logos or overlaid text: those are rejected or suppressed in favor of images that show the actual work.
Location Assets
If you have a Google Business Profile, link it to your Google Ads account and enable location assets. These add your city and distance from the searcher to the ad, reinforcing that you are a local contractor rather than a national lead-gen service. For searchers who prefer a local business over a large directory, this signal drives additional clicks.
Link your GBP under Tools and Settings in Google Ads, then enable the Location asset at the campaign or account level. Linking is a one-time setup that takes five minutes and automatically pulls your business name, city, and service area into eligible ads.
Three Actions for This Week
- Open your Google Ads account and navigate to Assets under the Campaigns menu. Check which asset types are enabled. Most contractor accounts have zero or one asset type configured. Add sitelinks first: create four to six links to your main service pages, filling in both description lines for each. This single change can increase your ad’s CTR by 10 to 20 percent in competitive markets by giving your ad more vertical space than competing ads without assets.
- Add call assets and set them to your actual business hours. Enable call reporting so Google tracks calls as conversions. This data feeds directly into any smart bidding strategy you run and allows the algorithm to optimize toward phone calls, not just clicks. Without call tracking data, Google optimizes toward whatever conversion action you have set, which for many contractor accounts is only form submissions, a much lower-volume signal than calls.
- Write eight callout phrases and add them to the account level. Account-level callouts apply to every campaign without manual replication. Think about the three or four objections a homeowner has before calling a contractor: cost transparency, licensing, response time, and reliability. Write callouts that address each one directly in 25 characters or fewer. Upload all eight and let Google rotate them. Check the asset performance report in 30 days to see which callouts are generating the most impressions and clicks, then add more variations of the top performers.
Assets cost nothing to add and nothing to show. They reduce cost per click by raising CTR, which improves Quality Score, which lowers the price you pay in the auction. The contractors running fully configured assets are paying less for the same clicks as contractors running bare ads. Setup takes two hours. The improvement compounds for the life of the campaign.
