Facebook AI Mode: How Contractors Get Found on Meta’s New AI Search

·6 min read

Meta launched AI Mode inside Facebook Search on June 15, 2026. Instead of returning a list of business pages when someone searches "plumber in Austin," AI Mode synthesizes a recommendation from Facebook data and surfaces a single answer. The same capability runs inside WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger through Meta AI, which now reaches over 3 billion users across Meta's platforms. Most contractors have not heard of it and have done nothing to prepare for it.

The mechanics are different from Google AI Mode, but the implication is the same: an AI system is deciding which contractor to recommend, and the contractors who have given that system enough good signals get the referral. Meta AI reads your Facebook Business page the way Google AI reads your GBP. Fields you left blank, reviews you have not collected, and posts you stopped writing in 2023 are signals the system has already evaluated and found lacking.

How Facebook AI Mode Selects Local Contractors

When a homeowner types a local service query into Facebook Search in AI Mode, or asks Meta AI in WhatsApp "who does good AC repair in my area," Meta AI reads three data layers to build its recommendation:

  • Facebook Business page structured fields: Category, About description, Services, Hours, Phone number, and Website. These are the first-party fields you control directly. Meta AI uses them to determine whether your page matches the query and whether it contains enough information to construct a confident answer.
  • Facebook Reviews: Both the star rating and the text content of individual reviews. Meta AI synthesizes review language to assess your trade expertise, service area, and quality. It is not reading just the average rating. It is reading what customers actually wrote.
  • Recent public posts: Pages with no posts from the past 30 days are treated as inactive by AI Mode and appear less frequently in synthesized recommendations. Post text and photo captions are read as content, not decoration.

A Facebook AI Mode recommendation for a home service contractor typically includes a business name, trade category, city, and a summary sentence pulled from the page or review content. That summary sentence is the opportunity. A page with a generic About section and no recent posts gives Meta AI nothing specific to summarize. A page with a complete Services listing and 15 detailed reviews provides three paragraphs of material to quote.

The Page Fields That Drive AI Visibility

Most contractors set up a Facebook Business page once, add a phone number and a generic description, and never touch it again. Meta AI reads every field. Here is what each one does:

FieldHow Meta AI uses itWhat most contractors have
CategoryMatches your page to trade-specific queries ("electrician," "plumber," "HVAC contractor")Set to "Home Services" or left as default
About / DescriptionExtracts your service description for synthesized answersGeneric, one sentence, no specific services or cities named
Services tabReads individual service names and descriptions to match specific queriesEmpty on most contractor pages
HoursUsed to answer urgency queries ("open now," "emergency available")Correct but no emergency hours specified
Recent postsConfirms the page is active; post captions are read as contentLast post from 6 to 12 months ago

What Facebook Reviews Do Inside Meta AI

Facebook Reviews carry more weight in Meta AI recommendations than they do in traditional search because Meta AI reads them as first-party data on its own platform. When a homeowner asks Meta AI for a plumber, the system reads Facebook Reviews with the same trust level it gives your page description. Google and Yelp reviews are third-party sources that Meta AI can only access through web crawling. Facebook Reviews are native data it reads directly.

Review recency matters. A page with 45 reviews but the most recent from 14 months ago signals a business that may no longer be as active. AI Mode favors pages with reviews posted in the past 60 days. One new review per week is enough to maintain the recency signal. The mechanism is the same one Google AI Overviews uses for GBP reviews: consistent, recent review activity is treated as a proxy for a healthy, active business.

Review text specificity matters more. A review that says "Great job, highly recommend!" gives Meta AI nothing to quote in a synthesized answer. A review that says "Mike replaced our water heater in two hours, charged exactly what he quoted, and came out the same afternoon we called in northwest Austin" gives Meta AI a service type, a timeline, a pricing trust signal, a geographic anchor, and a same-day availability confirmation. That review gets cited. The generic one does not. Your review request process should give customers a prompt that encourages them to include those details.

Facebook Posts as AI-Readable Content

Regular Facebook posts are not just for homeowners who scroll your page. They are indexed content that Meta AI reads when evaluating whether your business is active and relevant. A caption that reads "Installed a new heat pump system in Round Rock today. Unit was 22 years old. New system should cut their cooling bill by about 30 percent" tells Meta AI what you installed, where you work, and what outcome the customer got. That is a citation-ready content block that takes 30 seconds to write.

Post frequency matters. Pages with fewer than four public posts per month are treated as low-activity by Facebook AI Mode. You do not need professional photography or video production. Job photos from a phone, project completion notes, and before-and-after descriptions in plain language are what build the active-page signal. Post three to four times per week, include the city name in the caption, and describe the service type, the problem you solved, and the outcome. That pattern builds a signal over 30 to 60 days that Meta AI reads as a current, operating business worth recommending.

WhatsApp Business: The Contact Layer AI Mode Surfaces

When Meta AI generates a local contractor recommendation in WhatsApp or Messenger, it can surface a direct WhatsApp Business contact option alongside the recommendation. A contractor with a WhatsApp Business profile linked to their Facebook page gets a one-tap message button. A contractor without one gets a phone number only, which requires the homeowner to exit the app to call.

Setup takes under 20 minutes at business.whatsapp.com. Key fields to complete: business name, category (use "Plumber," "Electrician," or "HVAC Contractor"), business description matching your GBP language, hours, and website URL. Link the WhatsApp Business account to your Facebook Business page in Facebook Business Manager under Pages settings. Once linked, Meta AI can surface the WhatsApp contact option when it recommends your business across Meta apps.

Three Actions for This Week

  1. Rewrite your Facebook Business page About section using specific service and location language. The field allows 255 characters. Use all of them. Write it the same way you would write your GBP description: "Licensed HVAC contractor serving Austin, Round Rock, and Cedar Park. Same-day AC repair and furnace service Monday through Saturday, 7am to 7pm. Emergency service available after hours." That sentence structure is what Meta AI extracts when constructing a recommendation. A description that says "Family-owned business dedicated to quality service since 2004" contains no information the system can use to match your page to a homeowner query about a specific trade in a specific city. If you have not updated this field since you created the page, this is the highest-leverage 10-minute change available on the entire platform.
  2. Open the Services tab on your Facebook Business page and add your three to five primary services with specific descriptions. For each service, write two sentences: name the service, state what it includes, and mention your service area. "AC repair and diagnostic service for central air, mini-split, and heat pump systems in the Austin metro. We diagnose the issue before recommending any repair and provide a written estimate before starting work." Most contractor pages have an empty Services tab. Filling it out takes about 15 minutes and is a task most of your local competitors have not done. Each service you list becomes a separate query match point for Facebook AI Mode when homeowners search for that specific service type in your city.
  3. Ask your next three satisfied customers to leave a Facebook Review that includes the service type, city, and one specific detail about the experience. Give them a text prompt after the job completes: "If you have a minute, a review on our Facebook page helps a lot. It helps to mention what service we did and where you are located." A review naming the service and city is citation-ready content for Meta AI. Three specific Facebook Reviews this week produce more AI visibility improvement than completing every other optimization on this list, because Meta AI treats Facebook Reviews as high-trust first-party data and weights them heavily when constructing local recommendations. Run this same prompt consistently and the signal compounds every week as review volume and recency both grow.

Facebook AI Mode launched less than 30 days ago as of this post. Most contractors in every market have not updated their Facebook page for it yet. The businesses that rewrite their About section, fill in the Services tab, and start posting project photos this week will have a structural visibility advantage before their competitors realize the platform changed. The window to move first is open now.
